Slow Food - Enjoying natural and regional food and cooking
There's a growing worldwide movement called "Slow Food " and it's a wonderful alternative to the "Center Aisles of the Supermarket and Fast Food" thinking that has clogged our arteries, trashed our health, and turned the big farms into polluters. According to the Slow Food organization's webpage;
We believe that everyone has a fundamental right to pleasure and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this pleasure possible. Our movement is founded upon this concept of eco-gastronomy – a recognition of the strong connections between plate and planet.
Slow Food is good, clean and fair food. We believe that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.
We consider ourselves co-producers, not consumers, because by being informed about how our food is produced and actively supporting those who produce it, we become a part of and a partner in the production process.
The organization has many local chapters that sponsor events that not only educate, but also allow members to sample regional and locally produced foods, and let members know of local sources such as farmer's markets and farm stands that are selling foods produced in a sustainable manner.
Slow Food's website is a wealth of information, with articles on a range of topics-- from the importance of preserving heritage produce seeds to the wonders of the regional foods of Crete, from the dangers of invasive species to the depletion of the European Eel population from overfishing.
I've just discovered this organization and will join. I'll be letting you know my experiences and reviewing some of the events as I make discoveries in the world of Slow food!
